Draytek Vigor 3100 SDSL router
This guide takes you through the first steps of setting up the Vigor and getting yourself online with your SDSL connection. This Guide explains how to setup the Vigor in both NAT and No NAT scenarios, though the majority will be using no NAT for a SDSL connection
Installation
Once the Vigor has been unpacked, connect the supplied cables up as follows:
- Blue Ethernet CAT5 cable goes from the P1 socket on front of Vigor to either your PC or hub/switch, depending on how you plan to use the Vigor on your network.
- Black RJ11 cable (small connectors) goes from the DSL socket on the front of the Vigor to the SDSL Socket. Depending on the Faceplate BT have installed you may need the white RJ11 to BT plug adapter which is supplied.
Plug the power lead into the Mains socket and the back of the Vigor. Turn the power switch on and the lights on the front of the Vigor should light. The LAN Link 1 light should be on, indicating that a connection is detected between the Network device and the Vigor and possibly the 100mbit and full duplex lights depending on the device the Vigor is connected to. LAN Link 2-4 will also light if you have a device connected to them. The DSL light and ACT should be flashing, and the QOS light solid.
Setting up your PC
The Vigor has an in-built DHCP server which is enabled by default, meaning all you need to do on your PC is set it to automatically be assigned an IP address, and the Vigor will assign you one and set the default gateway itself. This can be selected by going into the network properties of your PC and adjusting the TCP / IP configuration of your network card.
Communicating with Vigor
Once your computer has been assigned an IP address, you can then communicate with the Vigor by opening up a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and typing in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
After a short time a window will appear asking you to enter your username and password. By default, these are both blank so clicking OK will take you straight to the main configuration screen, below:

You should setup a password straight away by clicking on System Maintenance, Administrator Password Setup. The default password is blank so leave the box marked Old password empty. After you have changed the password it will ask you to log in again. You will need to enter a Username of admin and the new password you have set.
If you need to re-configure which IP address the Vigor is located on, click on LAN, General Setup and adjust the settings under the NAT Usage section. Ignore the 2nd IP Address section unless you have a NO NAT connection, in which case read below. You can also configure the Vigor’s DHCP server from this same page.
Setting up the SDSL
To set the SDSL up, first click Internet Access from the menu on the left and then click the DSL Setting link. The screen you will see is shown below. You need to change the Annex to be B, this is very important as it will not sync if left set to A. Once you have clicked on ok the router will then ask if you want it to reboot, click ok and the router should reset. Once the router has reset the DSL light should now flash rapidly and then become solidly lit.

Once the router has rebooted you will need to log back in click Internet Access again and then click the PPPoE / PPPoA link. Below is the screen you will see; the settings should all be set as below, all you now need to do is enter your username and password on the right hand side and click OK. You username will be in the format of username@ispdomain e.g. example@altohiway.com.

If you have a NO NAT connection, you will need to click on LAN, General Setup. Under the section For IP Routing Usage click Enable, then below that enter the first usable IP address assigned to you, followed by the subnet mask. The Vigor will then be accessible on both the internal IP and the external IP you’ve just entered. See below:

You may then have to tell the Vigor to connect the SDSL by clicking Online Status on the menu, a button on the right hand side marked Dial PPPoA will connect the SDSL connection:

After a short time you will find the WAN Status displays with the IP address you’ll be assigned by our Radius server (this is static; you’ll get the same one every time). Your SDSL connection is now connected and your clients connected to it will be able to access the Internet.
Monitoring / Diagnosis
You can monitor the connections on the Vigor at any time by clicking Online Status from the menu; this details IP addresses, connection statistics and other useful information regarding your connection. If you need to force the SDSL connection to connect, this is also where this is carried out, simply by clicking Dial PPPoA.
There are some basic diagnostic tools included on the Vigor, which should help you troubleshoot any problems you may experience. These are accessible by clicking Diagnostic Tools on the menu. From that section, you will be presented with a menu allowing you to perform various functions from the router itself.
Support
The CD provided with the Vigor contains a fully documented help system, all graphically presented in the same way as the main menu of the Vigor. Click on the section that you need help with and it’ll show a full explanation of it. FAQ’s and a vast amount of information is also available from Draytek themselves at http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/index.html
