Securing Exchange 5.5

Configuring Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to prevent it relaying unwanted email (spam).

The following steps should assist you in configuring your Exchange server to not relay spam/junk email:

  1. Install Service Pack 3 or 4

  2. On the Internet Mail Service configuration in Exchange Administrator

  3. Select the Routing Tab

  4. Select ?re-route incoming mail? and add routing Yourdomain.co.uk route to

  5. Click Routing Restrictions

  6. Tick Hosts and Clients with these IP Addresses

  7. Do NOT add any IP addresses into the list

  8. Click OK and OK again back to configuration

  9. Select Connections Tab

  10. Select "Only from hosts using 'authentication'"

  11. Press the ?specify by host?... button

  12. Press Add and type in IP Address: 195.12.1.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0

  13. Select option ?Accept connection from this host?

  14. Repeat steps 11-12 for IP Address 195.12.4.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 plus your own internal network addresses of course to allow clients to send mail. Additionally add the range 213.83.66.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 if utilising MailController.

Voila, server secured.

*Please note: - Should you add any service pack to NT or Exchange, it is advisable to re-implement these settings.
