Configuring Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to prevent it relaying unwanted email (spam).
The following steps should assist you in configuring your Exchange server to not relay spam/junk email:
- Install Service Pack 3 or 4
- On the Internet Mail Service configuration in Exchange Administrator
- Select the Routing Tab
- Select ?re-route incoming mail? and add routing Yourdomain.co.uk route to
- Click Routing Restrictions
- Tick Hosts and Clients with these IP Addresses
- Do NOT add any IP addresses into the list
- Click OK and OK again back to configuration
- Select Connections Tab
- Select "Only from hosts using 'authentication'"
- Press the ?specify by host?... button
- Press Add and type in IP Address: 195.12.1.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Select option ?Accept connection from this host?
- Repeat steps 11-12 for IP Address 195.12.4.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 plus your own internal network addresses of course to allow clients to send mail. Additionally add the range 213.83.66.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 if utilising MailController.
Voila, server secured.
*Please note: - Should you add any service pack to NT or Exchange, it is advisable to re-implement these settings.
