Draytek Vigor 2800 ADSL router

*Please Note* The Vigor 2800 series routers use a different power supply to the older 2600 series. The 2800 series uses the 15V DC power supply and the 2600 series 12V AC. Swapping these over will cause catastrophic results!

This guide takes you through the first steps of setting up the Vigor and getting yourself online with your ADSL connection. For this guide we will assume you are connecting the Vigor to one PC. Those connecting it over a network will need to slightly adjust this guide although the basics remain the same throughout.

Installation

Once the Vigor has been unpacked, connect the supplied cables up as follows:

  • Blue Ethernet CAT5 cable goes from the P1 socket on back of Vigor to either your PC or hub/switch, depending on how you plan to use the Vigor on your network.
  • Black RJ11 cable (small connectors) goes from the DSL socket on the back of the Vigor to your microfilter which then plugs into your wall socket which has the ADSL enabled.

Plug the power supply into the Mains socket and the back of the Vigor. Turn the power switch on and the lights on the front of the Vigor should light. The P1 light should be on, indicating that a connection is detected between the PC and the Vigor. P2 – P4 will also light if you have a device connected to them. The ADSL LINE light should flash, then go steady once the ADSL has been synchronised.

Setting up your PC

The Vigor has an in-built DHCP server which is enabled by default, meaning all you need to do on your PC is set it to automatically be assigned an IP address, and the Vigor will assign you one and set the default gateway itself. This can be selected by going into the network properties of your PC and adjusting the TCP / IP configuration of your network card.

Communicating with Vigor

Once your computer has been assigned an IP address, you can then communicate with the Vigor by opening up a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and typing in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

After a short time a window will appear asking you to enter your username and password. By default, these are both blank so clicking OK will take you straight to the main configuration screen, below:

You can setup a password straight away by clicking on Administrator Password Setup.

If you need to re-configure which IP address the Vigor is located on, click on LAN, General Setup and adjust the settings under the NAT Usage section. Ignore the 2nd IP Address section unless you have a NO NAT connection, in which case read below. You can also configure the Vigor’s DHCP server from this same page.

Setting up the ADSL

To set the ADSL up, first click Internet Access from the menu on the left and then click the PPPoE / PPPoA link. Below is the screen you will see; the settings should all be set as below, all you now need to do is enter your username and password on the right hand side and click OK.

If you have a NO NAT connection, you will need to save your settings here and go back to the Main Menu, and click on LAN, General Setup. Under the section For IP Routing Usage click Enable, then below that enter the first usable IP address assigned to you, followed by the subnet mask. The Vigor will then be accessible on both the internal IP and the external IP you’ve just entered. See below:

You may then have to tell the Vigor to connect the ADSL by clicking Online Status on the menu, a button on the right hand side marked Dial PPPoA will connect the ADSL connection:

After a short time you will find the WAN Status displays with the IP address you’ll be assigned by our Radius server (this is static; you’ll get the same one every time). Your ADSL connection is now connected and your clients connected to it will be able to access the internet.

Monitoring / Diagnosis

You can monitor the connections on the Vigor at any time by clicking Online Status from the menu; this details IP addresses, connection statistics and other useful information regarding your connection. If you need to force the ADSL connection to connect, this is also where this is carried out, simply by clicking Dial PPPoA.

There are some basic diagnostic tools included on the Vigor, which should help you troubleshoot any problems you may experience. These are accessible by clicking Diagnostic Tools on the menu. From that section, you will be presented with a menu allowing you to perform various functions from the router itself.

Support

The CD provided with the Vigor contains a fully documented help system, all graphically presented in the same way as the main menu of the Vigor. Click on the section that you need help with and it will show a full explanation of it. FAQs and a vast amount of information is also available from Draytek themselves at http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/index.html
